Tips for Cleaning Your Boat Inside and Out

Your boat, much like any other vehicle, has to be looked after and cared for. Whether you sail on saltwater or freshwater, you have to take a few steps to ensure that your boat is in perfect shape and capable of taking along for the next sailing. On a nice summer day, you can use the following tips to clean your boat inside out:

Begin with the topside

Given that there is a gel coating on boat surfaces, it is easy to clean them regularly. Use boat soap or any other mild soap to clean the gel coat well. Then, use fresh water to provide the boat with a thorough rinse in order to prevent accumulation of water spots or soap scum. Begin at the bow area and work back.

Wash the canvas

Make use a dish washing detergent to wash the boat canvas. If needed, you can use a soft scrub brush. From time to time, you need to use petroleum jelly and a paraffin wax to lubricate the snaps and the zippers well respectively. You also need to treat the boat canvas at regular intervals with the help of a waterproofing solution that can prevent degeneration of the fabric.

Use glass windows with care

Use a water-vinegar solution or a glass cleaner to clean up the windows. Get a soft cloth to apply transparent silicon spray over the glass surface, in order to avoid scratches. Use water to clean the vinyl windows given that chemicals present in the cleaners can lead to vinyl degeneration. Apply transparent wax after you are done with the cleaning.

Remove salt and dirt

Use a wet cloth to wipe down the upholstery, and get rid of the salt and dirt. With a damp cloth moistened with vinyl upholstery cleaner, you can wipe the dirt off and then rinse the surface. Go for an upholstery wax which can prevent damage from UV rays. Mix up a 4:1 water-ammonia solution to remove unpleasant mildew stains. Use a medium or soft brush to scrub the entire region, and then rinse it with fresh water.

Rinse the ropes
When the ropes are not being used, keep them away from direct sunlight. After every use, rinse the ropes properly. Use a mild detergent to wash the ropes in a washing machine. In order to prevent damage to the washing machine, you should first keep the ropes wrapped in a pillowcase.
